Parkland Cross Country Ski Club
January 12, 2010
General Meeting

Meeting called to order at 7:40 p.m.

Reports:

Past President’s:  The Loppet scheduled for Feb 6, 2010 has been cancelled due to difficulty in getting enough volunteers to run the event.  Three other ski events, Ski For Light, World Cup races and the Alberta Winter Games, scheduled for the same weekend, have drawn away much of the resources needed to run the Loppet.  The lack of volunteers may indicate that it is time for another organization to run the Loppet.  The reality is that most members of the Parkland XC Ski Club are interested in ski touring rather than ski racing.

Treasurer’s report:  The Club’s balance as of the end of the year is $19,533.44, $14,200 of which came from a CIP grant.  In December, membership fees brought in $170 and the Map & Compass course taught by Brian Davies, brought in $205.  The associate accounts (Red Deer Nordic, Biathlon, Jr. Jackrabbits) have assets of $2710.46.  Membership consists of 92 members plus another 53 members of the Red Deer Nordic and 145 jackrabbits for a total membership of 290.

V.P report.  The course schedule has pretty much finished.  Mountain weather took place last week and snow caving is scheduled for the coming weekend.  A TL 1 course is to come.

Newsletter Editor:  Newsletter is getting out to members with no problems.  Only 1 or 2 members without computers are getting their copy via Canada Post.

            Social:   Nothing to report.

Day Trip Chairman:  The list of upcoming day tours is in the Newsletter.  The Pigeon Lake day tour has been rescheduled for Feb 6.  Meet at the rec centre parking lot at 10 a.m. to car pool to Pigeon Lake.  More details to follow in the next Newsletter.

Mountain Tour Chairman:  This weekend’s tour still has 3 openings.  To get on any of the remaining tours, contact the tour leader.  The tour cancellation policy has been changed so that you must cancel your booking a minimum of 14 days before the tour to get your money back.  If you cancel within the 14 days prior to the tour, you will not get a refund of your accommodation fee for both nights.  You will get a refund of the float fund fee (normally $9 a weekend) and any fee for a beacon or shovel that you have paid.  There is currently $7017.99 in the Mountain Tour Fund with around $2000 in hostel bills yet to be paid.

Publicity:  Richard asked for stuff to put into the club’s history books, particularly pictures.  They can be sent by e-mail to Richard and he will arrange to get them printed to go into the history book.  A current copy is available for examination at the back table.

New Business:

Lessons:  There has been a huge response for lessons.  The city accepted 39 registrations rather than the maximum of 24 and 38 of the registrants showed up for the first lesson.  Thanks to Don for a good job in accommodating all the registrants.  Don has set up an extra session from 4-6 p.m. on the lesson days to reduce the overcrowding.

Following adjournment and a short snack break, Mike Spencer gave an excellent slide show on his successful climb of Mt. Logan (the highest mountain in Canada).   Frank was so awed that he forgot to ask Mike how much it cost him for the trip.

The next executive meeting will be at Don’s on January 21.
