1. REPORTS

President:
Pat gave a warm welcome to all the new people in attendance and tonight’s special guest Chic Scott.

Pat presented two mail items for perusal: 1) brochures from the Mountain Hostel located in the Selkirk Mountains near Nakusp. 2) a poster and pamphlets for the Nipika Loppet in Invermere. Don Wales added a third item – a poster for the Golden Loppet, and Peggy Birse informed us that there was a new hostel in Golden.

Vice President:
Loppet – February 4, 2006
Don Wales is coordinating this year’s Loppet and asked for club support to make it a success, for Bob Johnstone’s sake as well as for the club. Six volunteers are needed for Registrations; six for Timing; one to assist Dick Pawloff in Results; twelve controllers. Refreshments will be provided by Social Directors Brian Davies & Carol Lindner. Club members who cannot volunteer on Loppet day are encouraged to cook chili or bake cookies for the event. Don circulated a sign-up sheet, adding that members who did not sign would be contacted by the Phone Committee.

Treasurer:
Jenni Duke presented her monthly report and circulated name tags. As of December 31, 2005, total club assets amounted to $5,998.26 broken down as follows: General - $858.51; Loppet - $1,154.66; Tour Leader - $175.84; Investment Certificate - $2,000; Junior Jackrabbits - $1,605.35; Senior Jackrabbits - $146.14; and Biathlon - $57.76.

Newsletter:
Terry Ferster was absent.

Mountain Tours:
Mike Spencer gave a brief description of mountain tours for the benefit of newcomers. He still had a few openings for his upcoming beginners trip to Ribbon Creek on January 20-22, but stressed that the skiing would be exclusively on trackset trails.

Frank Weber spoke on behalf of Marilyn Strilchuk to promote their open trip to Ribbon Creek on January 27-29. The theme is a fondue meal, with destination unknown. The trip meeting is Sunday, January 15 at 6:30 at Marilyn’s place.

Brian Davies also had a few spots left for his February 10-12 open trip to the toe of the Saskatchewan Glacier, always a favorite destination.

Brian Sam promised good skiing for his advanced four-day trip to Fryatt Hut on February 16-20.

Social Directors:
Carol Lindner thanked all the snack contributors for tonight’s meeting.

Publicity:
Dale Ferguson expressed his intention to increase the club’s profile by including newspaper articles and photos promoting club activities in his advertising strategy.

Day Tours/Lessons:
Pam Ralston announced that the first day tour to Crimson Lake this coming Sunday might be a hiking tour unless we receive a few inches of snow. Pam suggested that interested participants contact Lucienne Partridge or Barb Coulter to confirm the time and location of departure. No other day tours have been planned so far due to lack of snow.

Don Wales reported that the first ski instruction class due to start on Thursday had been cancelled due to lack of snow. Lessons will be postponed until conditions improve. According to Pam, only four people have registered so far. She has a poster ready to be copied and posted at various locations, as it was done last year.

Website:
Dick Pawloff was absent.

2. NEW BUSINESS:

Ski Waxing Clinic:
Graham, a Red Deer College student working at Valhalla Pure Outfitters, invited meeting attendants to register for a ski waxing clinic to be held at the store on Wednesday, January 11, 2006. The cost is $5.

The business part of the meeting finished at 8:00, followed by a fascinating photo presentation by Chic Scott. All photos were from his new book on the history of backcountry skiing in the Rockies.
