Ladies Tour – A Look Back To March 2011

It seems to be the year of back-up plans. Here we are at Mosquito Creek on Friday night, 6 of us chomping at the bit and all looking forward to a great weekend at Bow Hut. But after evaluating the avalanche bulletins for an hour or so, we came to the conclusion it was not worth the risk. For the 2nd time this season the best back-up plan seemed to be Skoki.

It was a fabulous day and after a relaxed sleep (no snoring on ladies trips!) and getting up at 7:00 (or was it 8:00? – it was time change weekend) we were off.

The snow was perfect, got some nice tele-turns in on Deception Pass and made it back to the cars around 6:00 (or was it 5:00?)

Sunday’s ski took us to the Paint Pots in time for lunch in the sunshine and some goofy photos and girly talk!

Our crew of 8 included David, Margo, George, Karen, Todd, Jane, Steve and Walter.

The temperature soared during the week leading up to our trip – a high of +11 in Calgary. Then it plummeted to – 14 on Saturday, and -23 Sunday. The blowing snow had covered roads that had been clear and dry earlier in the week, making  travel Friday evening to Bell Cabin the first challenge. We woke to 15 cm of new snow at Canmore, and set off optimistically. Avalanche danger was still high, so our first day’s ski destination changed to low-risk Chester Lake.

Egypt Lake Hut X-Mass Ski Tour

By John Cameron

Moderate temperatures and good snow greeted eight enthusiastic back country skiers at the Sunshine parking lot for our second mountain tour of the season.

The trail was well covered in snow and made the ascent easier as the wax and skins were holding well.  A lunch stop was made just before the last ascent on Healy Pass where 3 or more feet of snow greeted us. This made for some interesting moments on the way down to the cabin especially for yours truly having ventured out on his first real back country trip.
