We often hold regional races and/or a friendly loppet named in honour of long-time club member and community supporter Bob Johnstone.
For many years we have combined the loppet with the Alberta Cup races, Western Canadian championships and international race events which have brought hundreds of racers and their families to Red Deer to enjoy our beautiful trails at River Bend Golf and Recreation Area.
Grab a front-row seat as a volunteer at the races! Check back here each season for a direct link to your volunteer opportunities.
Who was Bob Johnstone?
Bob was a tireless and generous volunteer in Red Deer. His contributions made our city a better place.
Born and educated in Red Deer, Bob had a rich career as a social worker in a number of areas of Canada. Upon retirement, he returned to the city where he became actively involved in a number of community organizations: many that involved the environment, cross-country skiing, hiking, cycling and running. He touched many lives through his activities and especially through his work with the Alzheimer Society. One of his dreams was to see the completion of the Trans Canada Trail and he worked hard on this project.
Bob was very active in outdoor activities and could often be seen cycling, running and cross-country skiing throughout Red Deer. An avid gardener, hegrew many fruits and vegetables that he shared with everyone, including the deer. Bob received a number of awards including the Alberta Centennial Award in 2005. He was a very kind and gentle person and gave freely of his time to assist others.
